What changed for Ghanaians on 15 September 2026

On 15 September 2026, Thailand overhauled its Visa on Arrival scheme, narrowing it down to just three nationalities: Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia. For Ghanaians, this update made no practical difference, because a Ghanaian passport was never on the visa-exemption list and was never included among the Visa on Arrival countries either before or after the change. In other words, the rule that applies to you today is the same one that applied beforehand: a visa arranged ahead of travel is compulsory, and there is no option to land in Thailand and sort out paperwork at the airport. If you are planning a trip from Ghana, treat 15 September 2026 as background noise rather than a date that affects your own preparations, and focus instead on applying for the correct visa before you fly.

Before you fly

• Check that your passport has at least six months of validity remaining on the date you land in Thailand, plus at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
• Carry proof of funds, since Thai immigration can ask Ghanaian travellers to show at least 20,000 THB per person, or 40,000 THB for a family, during spot checks.
• Complete the Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours of your flight to Thailand; it is free through the Immigration Bureau's portal and its QR code will be checked at the border.
• Apply for your e-Visa through thaievisa.go.th well before departure, since Ghanaian applications typically take three to ten working days to process, and only cover a single entry of up to 60 days.

Staying longer than the visa allows

Since a Ghanaian passport never qualifies for visa-free entry, popping across a land border to reset the clock is not an option that applies to you at all — the two-visits-a-year limit on repeat crossings only concerns visa-exempt travellers. If you want more time than your e-Visa allows, the straightforward route is a single extension of up to 30 days, arranged in person at an immigration office for 1,900 THB, taken once your original 60-day stay is close to running out. For a longer trip than a standard holiday, remote workers and long-course students can look into the Destination Thailand Visa, which runs for five years with 180 days allowed per entry, provided you can show 500,000 THB in funds and apply from outside Thailand.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi and other Thai airports, Ghanaians are not among the nationalities allowed to use the automated arrival gates, so you will need to join the Foreign Passport queue and go through a manned immigration counter instead. The officer there will check your passport and visa, then scan the QR code generated when you filed your Digital Arrival Card, so it helps to have that saved and ready to show on your phone or printed out before you reach the counter.
