Thailand visa for Romanians 2026: 30 days visa-free

What changed for Romanians on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Romanian passport holders arriving in Thailand were granted 60 days of visa-free stay on entry. A Ministry of Interior regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 cut that allowance to 30 days, effective from 15 September 2026. If you were already stamped into Thailand before that date, your passport keeps the full 60 days, even if your trip continues past mid-September. For any Romanian arriving from 15 September 2026 onward, though, the entry stamp reads 30 days, so you need to plan return flights, onward travel or an extension application around that shorter window rather than assuming the older allowance still applies.

Before you fly

• Make sure your Romanian passport has at least six months of validity left from your arrival date in Thailand, plus one completely blank page for the entry stamp.
• Carry proof of onward or return travel and be ready to show around 20,000 THB per person, or 40,000 THB per family, if an immigration officer asks for evidence of funds.
• File the Digital Arrival Card online within 72 hours before you land, using the Immigration Bureau's free portal, and keep the QR code ready to show at passport control.
• If you would rather arrive on an e-Visa instead of the visa-free stamp, apply at thaievisa.go.th before departure and allow three to ten working days for processing.

Staying longer than 30 days

If 30 days is not enough, Romanians have several routes to more time without leaving the country repeatedly. Before your stamp expires, you can apply at an immigration office inside Thailand for one extension of up to 30 days, for 1,900 THB. If you know in advance that you need longer, applying for an e-Visa from home before departure gives a single-entry 60-day stay, itself extendable once by 30 days on the same terms. Remote workers or long-course students can look into the Destination Thailand Visa, valid five years with 180 days per entry, though it requires proof of 500,000 THB in funds and must be arranged before you travel. Repeated land-border exits are not a substitute, since visa-free land entries are capped at two per calendar year.

At the airport

Romanian passport holders are not among the nationalities allowed through Suvarnabhumi's automated arrival gates, so head for the Foreign Passport counters instead and expect a manual check by an immigration officer. Have your passport and the QR code from your Digital Arrival Card ready on your phone or printed out, since officers scan it alongside your passport before stamping you in. Building in a little extra queuing time at the counters, rather than counting on the automated gates, makes the process smoother for Romanians landing in Thailand.
