Thailand visa for Swedes 2026: 30 days visa-free

What changed for Swedes on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Swedish passport holders arriving visa-free in Thailand were given 60 days on entry. A Ministry of Interior regulation published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August 2026 cut that allowance for Swedes, and since 15 September 2026 a Swedish passport receives 30 days on landing instead. If your passport was stamped in before that date, the 60-day stamp already in your passport still stands, so check the date on your entry stamp rather than the date you booked your flight. For a trip planned around the old allowance, this halves the time you can stay without applying for anything extra, so build your itinerary around 30 days, or look at an extension or a visa if you need longer.

Before you fly

• Make sure your Swedish passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Thailand, and that it has at least one blank page free for the entry stamp.
• Book an onward or return flight before you travel, since immigration officers can ask Swedes arriving visa-free to show proof that they plan to leave Thailand within the 30-day stay.
• Carry enough cash or accessible funds to cover spot checks, since Swedes travelling alone may be asked to show 20,000 baht, or 40,000 baht if travelling as a family.
• File the Digital Arrival Card in the 72 hours before landing in Thailand, using the Immigration Bureau's free portal, and keep the QR code ready to show at the airport.

Staying longer than 30 days

If 30 days is not enough, you can apply for one extension of up to 30 days at an immigration office inside Thailand before your stamp runs out, for 1,900 baht. Swedes who want more time from the outset can instead apply for an e-Visa at thaievisa.go.th before leaving Sweden, which grants a single entry of 60 days and can also be extended once by 30 days. For remote work or a long course, the Destination Thailand Visa covers stays of up to 180 days per entry across five years, provided you can show 500,000 baht in funds. Leaving and re-entering by land repeatedly is not a workaround, since visa-free land crossings are limited to two per calendar year.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi, Swedes are among the nationalities allowed to use the automated arrival gates, provided you have already filed your Digital Arrival Card, this is not your first visit to Thailand, and you are entering visa-free. The gate scans your passport and reads the QR code linked to your arrival card instead of a printed form. First-time visitors, or anyone without a filed card, should head to a staffed immigration counter, where an officer checks the same QR code and stamps the passport by hand.
