What changed for Mexicans on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Mexican travellers could land in Thailand and receive 60 days on arrival without applying for anything in advance. That exemption came from a rule covering 93 nationalities introduced on 15 July 2024, but Mexico was left off the new list of 60 countries that replaced it, so the free stay ended on 15 September 2026. From that date, a Mexican passport needs a visa or an e-Visa arranged before departure, and airlines check for it at the gate, so turning up without one risks being turned away before you board. In practice, this means building the visa or e-Visa application into your planning timeline, rather than leaving it until you reach immigration in Thailand.

Before you fly

• Check that your Mexican passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and still has a blank page, since Thai immigration can refuse entry without both.
• Apply for your e-Visa well ahead of travel, since processing usually takes between three and ten working days, and you cannot board without an approved visa in hand.
• Carry proof of funds in case of a spot check, since officers can ask Mexican visitors to show 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht for a family.
• Fill in the Digital Arrival Card in the 72 hours before you land, using the Immigration Bureau's free online form, and keep the QR code ready to show at the airport.

Staying longer than the visa allows

If 60 days is not enough, you can extend the tourist e-Visa once, adding 30 days at an immigration office for 1,900 baht. Mexicans planning a longer stay for remote work or a long course of study can instead apply for the Destination Thailand Visa before leaving Mexico, which allows stays of up to 180 days per entry across five years, provided you can show 500,000 baht in funds. Repeatedly crossing a land border to reset the clock will not work for a Mexican passport, since the two-entries-a-year allowance only applies to travellers who never needed a visa in the first place, and overstaying instead brings a daily fine and, past 90 days, a ban on returning.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi, Mexicans are not among the nationalities allowed to use the automated e-gates, so you queue at the Foreign Passport counters like most other visitors. An immigration officer checks your passport, your visa or e-Visa, and the QR code generated when you filed your Digital Arrival Card, so it helps to have that code saved or printed rather than searching for it at the counter.
