Thailand visa for Salvadorans 2026: e-Visa needed

What changed for Salvadorans on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Salvadorans could fly into Thailand without a visa and stay for up to 60 days at a stretch. That arrangement came from a 60-day exemption granted to a group of 93 countries in July 2024, but the exemption was withdrawn on 15 September 2026 under a Royal Gazette notice, and El Salvador is not among the 60 countries that kept visa-free access afterwards. For a Salvadoran planning a trip now, this means the old routine of simply booking a flight and showing your passport at the gate no longer works. You need to secure a visa or e-Visa before departure, since airlines check for this at the gate before you board, not only at Thai immigration once you land.

Before you fly

• Make sure your Salvadoran passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and has a blank page free for the Thai entry stamp.
• Apply for your e-Visa at thaievisa.go.th well before you travel, since processing usually takes between three and ten working days.
• Carry proof of funds, since immigration can ask to see 20,000 THB per person, or 40,000 THB if you are travelling as a family.
• Submit your Thailand Digital Arrival Card in the 72 hours before your flight lands, since every Salvadoran passport holder must file it regardless of visa type.

Staying longer than the visa allows

If a single stamp is not long enough, Salvadorans have a few legitimate ways to stay on. A tourist e-Visa lasts 60 days and can be extended once, by 30 days, at an immigration office for 1,900 THB. Salvadorans who want to work remotely or take a longer course of study can look at the Destination Thailand Visa, which runs for five years with stays of up to 180 days per entry, though it requires proof of 500,000 THB in funds and is applied for before you leave home. Whatever route you choose, treat it as a proper application rather than repeatedly crossing a land border to reset the clock: that cap only covers visa-exempt entries, which no longer apply to Salvadoran travellers.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi, Salvadorans are not among the 33 nationalities allowed to use the automated e-gates, so you will pass through the Foreign Passport counters with an immigration officer instead. Have your Digital Arrival Card QR code ready on your phone or printed out, since it gets scanned at the immigration desk along with your passport and visa. The officer may also ask to see evidence of your funds or your travel plans, so keep those documents within reach as you queue.
