What changed for Albanians on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Albanians could fly into Thailand and receive 60 days on arrival without any paperwork, part of an exemption that had covered 93 countries since 15 July 2024. That exemption was withdrawn on 15 September 2026, and Albania was not carried over onto the shorter list of 60 countries that kept the arrangement. In practical terms, an Albanian passport no longer opens the border on its own: you now need a visa or an e-Visa sorted out before you leave home, and airlines are checking for it at the departure gate, so turning up without one risks being turned away before you even board, rather than facing questions only after you land. Build the extra step into your planning well ahead of any trip.

Before you fly

• Check your Albanian passport has at least six months of validity left from your arrival date and at least one blank page, since Thai immigration checks both before letting you through.
• Apply for your e-Visa at thaievisa.go.th well before you fly, since Albanian applications typically take between three and ten working days to process.
• Carry proof you can cover your stay, since officers can ask to see the Thai baht equivalent of 20,000 per person, or 40,000 for a family travelling together.
• Complete the Digital Arrival Card no earlier than 72 hours before your flight lands in Thailand, since Albanians must file it regardless of which visa they hold, and the QR code it generates gets checked at immigration.

Staying longer than the visa allows

If a 60-day e-Visa is not enough, Albanians can apply once for a 30-day extension at an immigration office inside Thailand, for 1,900 THB, which is the straightforward way to add time to a single trip. Anyone planning a longer stay for remote work or extended study can look at the Destination Thailand Visa instead, which is arranged outside Thailand and permits stays of up to 180 days at a time across five years, provided you can show 500,000 THB in funds. What doesn't work for Albanians is nipping across a land border and coming back for a fresh stamp: that two-trip-a-year allowance only applied to visa-exempt travellers, a status Albanian passports no longer hold, so a proper visa or e-Visa is the only way in.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi, the automated e-gates are set aside for a list of 33 nationalities that does not include Albania, so you'll go to the Foreign Passport counters instead of the fast lane. Have your Digital Arrival Card ready on your phone, because the immigration officer scans the QR code it generates alongside your passport and visa before stamping you in.
