What changed for North Macedonians on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, North Macedonians could land in Thailand and be waved through for a 60-day stay without any visa arranged in advance. That arrangement, part of a wider exemption covering dozens of passports, was withdrawn on 15 September 2026, and North Macedonia was not carried over onto the shorter list of countries kept on the new arrangement. From that date, anyone travelling on a North Macedonian passport must hold a visa, most practically a tourist e-Visa, before boarding a flight to Thailand. Airline staff check for it at check-in, so turning up without one risks being refused boarding rather than sorted out on landing. Building in the processing time for the e-Visa is now part of planning any trip.

Before you fly

Check that your North Macedonian passport has at least six months of validity left on your arrival date and still has a blank page free for the immigration stamp.
Apply for the e-Visa through thaievisa.go.th well before you fly, since North Macedonian applications are typically processed within three to ten working days.
Carry proof of at least 20,000 THB per person, or 40,000 THB for a family travelling together, in case immigration officers ask for evidence of funds.
Fill in the Digital Arrival Card online in the 72 hours before landing, whatever visa route you used, and keep the QR code ready for immigration.

Staying longer than the visa allows

For North Macedonians, the standard tourist e-Visa runs for 60 days, and it can be extended once by 30 days at an immigration office for 1,900 THB if you decide to stay on. Anyone settling in for remote work or a longer course of study can look at the Destination Thailand Visa instead, valid for five years with stays of up to 180 days per entry, though it asks for proof of 500,000 THB in funds and must be arranged from outside Thailand. Slipping across a land border and back is not a workaround: the twice-yearly allowance for that only applies to visa-exempt travellers, a category North Macedonians no longer belong to.

At the airport

North Macedonians are not among the nationalities cleared for the automated e-gates at Suvarnabhumi, so head for the Foreign Passport counters and expect a staffed check rather than a self-service gate. An immigration officer looks over your passport, the visa or e-Visa inside it, and the QR code generated when you filed your Digital Arrival Card, which gets scanned at the desk. Having that QR code saved and ready on your phone, alongside your passport, keeps the queue moving.
