Thailand visa for Tongans 2026: e-Visa needed

What changed for Tongans on 15 September 2026

Until 14 September 2026, Tongans could enter Thailand without a visa and stay for up to 60 days, under an exemption that had covered dozens of nationalities since July 2024. That exemption was withdrawn the next day, and Tongan passports were not included in the new shorter list of nationalities kept on the visa-free scheme. For a Tongan traveller, this means the trip now needs planning ahead of time: a visa or e-Visa has to be sorted before you leave home, since airlines check your documents at check-in and will refuse boarding without the right paperwork. There is no on-arrival option to fall back on if you land in Thailand without one already arranged.

Before you fly

• Check that your Tongan passport is valid for at least six months from your arrival date and has a blank page free for stamps, since immigration officers can refuse entry without both.
• Apply for your e-Visa through the online portal before you travel, allowing at least ten working days for processing so a delay does not affect your flight or your travel plans.
• Carry proof of enough money for your stay, since officers can ask a Tongan traveller to show around 20,000 THB in cash or the equivalent, or double that for a family travelling together.
• Fill in the Digital Arrival Card no more than 72 hours before you land in Thailand, and keep the QR code it gives you ready to show at immigration.

Staying longer than the visa allows

If a 60-day e-Visa is not enough, a Tongan visa holder can apply once for a 30-day extension at an immigration office, for 1,900 THB, reaching up to 90 days total. For a first trip, applying for the tourist e-Visa, rather than assuming any other option, is the route open to Tongans, since no visa-on-arrival applies to this passport. Tongans planning remote work or a longer course of study can look at the Destination Thailand Visa, which allows repeated 180-day stays over five years for those who can show substantial savings and apply from outside Thailand. Leaving and re-entering purely to reset the clock is not workable, since the two-trip yearly limit on visa-exempt crossings does not apply to a passport that already needs a visa for every entry.

At the airport

At Suvarnabhumi, Tongans are not among the nationalities allowed to use the automated e-gates, so you go through the Foreign Passport counters with an immigration officer instead of the self-service lane. Have your passport and the QR code from your Digital Arrival Card ready, since the officer scans this code along with your passport before stamping you in. Keep the paperwork accessible rather than buried in luggage, as queues move faster when a Tongan passport holder can present everything without searching for it.
