Embassies may refuse without a reason, and the fee is not refunded at the posts that state it. This section covers all Thai e-Visa types. The two articles below go deeper into the DTV and the tourist visa.
What this section covers
- How to read your e-Visa status: request, delay or refusal.
- What Thai embassies state about refusals, fees and reasons.
- The rules that apply to every new application, whatever the visa.
- Links to the DTV and tourist visa guides, which list the causes for each visa.
Read your status first
| What you see | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A request for more documents | Not a refusal. Los Angeles and Washington say officers ask for more when a file is unclear or incomplete | Upload exactly what the message asks for. Washington says the status updates within 3 to 5 business days after you upload |
| No decision, still inside the post's time | Normal processing. Paris: about 4 weeks for the DTV. Munich: 15 consular working days. Canberra: at least 10 business days, up to 4 to 6 weeks. Los Angeles: at least 15 business days for the METV | Wait. Check your e-mail and the e-Visa account |
| No decision, well past the post's time | A delay, not a refusal | Write to the consular section. Quote your application number |
| A request for an interview | Helsinki says it may ask for one | Reply and attend |
| Refused, with a reason | The embassy found a specific problem | Fix that cause. See the visa guide below |
| Refused, with no reason | Washington says officers may reject an application without justification | Compare your whole file with the post's list. See the steps below |
What embassies say about refusals
| Point | What the page says | Post |
|---|---|---|
| Approval | All applications are subject to approval | Helsinki |
| Reasons | Officers may reject without giving a reason | Washington DC |
| Reasons for denial (tourist visa) | Unprepared documents, unmet requirements, wrong visa type, incorrect information, applying from outside the area | Los Angeles |
| Fees | Not refunded | Washington DC, Helsinki, Singapore |
| Changes after you submit | An application cannot be amended | Helsinki |
We found no official refusal rate, no appeal process and no waiting period before a new application on any page we read.
Which guide fits your case
| Your visa | Typical causes | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| DTV (workcation, soft power, family) | Wrong embassy since 31 Aug 2026, police certificate too old, residence proof, funds over the wrong months | DTV rejected |
| Tourist visa (TR or METV) | Bank statement below the post's amount, flights and bookings that do not match, wrong post, wrong visa type | Tourist visa rejected |
Steps after a refusal
- Read the decision message again. Note the date and every word about missing or unclear items.
- Open your embassy's current page. Check its date. DTV documents changed on 31 August 2026, and visa-free stays changed on 15 September 2026.
- Lay your file next to the list. Mark each item that is missing, out of date or unclear.
- Fix the cause. A new certificate, statements for the right months, a clear PDF instead of a photo.
- Ask if you cannot find the cause. Write to the consular section by the e-mail on its website, quote your application number and ask which documents to change.
- Apply again with a new application. Expect to pay the fee again.
Rules for every new application
These apply to every Thai visa, and to every site that offers help.
- Do not invent, edit or buy documents. False documents can lead to refusal and worse problems later.
- Do not borrow money or move it in only for the statement. Show funds that are really yours or your sponsor's.
- Do not pay anyone who says they "know someone" at the embassy. The embassy decides.
- Do not switch to another embassy only to get around a refusal. Since 31 August 2026, the DTV needs nationality or permanent residence in the post's country. See which embassy.
- Be honest in every field. A mismatch between two applications is easy to see.
Before you apply again
- You know what the decision message says, word by word.
- You read your embassy's current page and checked its date.
- Every item on the list is present, recent and readable.
- The cause is fixed, not only explained.
- You accept that the fee is paid again.
Our DTV pre-check and tourist visa pre-check compare a new file with your embassy's list before you pay. We do not apply for you, and the embassy makes the decision.
Not confirmed yet
No official page we read states these points. Ask your embassy before you pay or submit.
- Whether any post has a formal appeal process.
- Whether a refusal affects a later application at another embassy.
- Whether a refused fee is ever credited to a new application.
Frequently asked questions
Is a request for more documents a refusal?
No. Los Angeles and Washington describe it as a request. Upload what the message asks for. Washington says the status updates within 3 to 5 business days after you upload.
Will the embassy tell me why I was refused?
Not always. Washington says officers may reject an application without justification. You can write to the consular section and ask which documents to change.
Do I get the fee back?
Not at the posts that state it. Washington DC, Helsinki and Singapore say visa fees are non-refundable.
Can I correct a mistake after I submit?
Helsinki says an application cannot be amended after submission. Contact the embassy if you find an error.
How soon can I apply again?
We found no official waiting period. Apply again when the cause is fixed.
