Why this matters
Since 31 August 2026 this document replaced the old "document indicating current location". It also decides which embassy handles your case. Madrid and Vientiane say applicants must be nationals or permanent residents of their country. See which embassy before you apply from a country where you only stay for a short time.

What each embassy names
| Embassy | Examples given | Note |
|---|---|---|
| London | Permanent residence in the UK, Ireland or British Overseas Territories, for example UK indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residency | Permanent statuses only in the examples |
| Washington DC | Valid US visa; permanent resident card | Wording allows a valid US visa, which is broader than "permanent" |
| Los Angeles[3] | Valid driving licence; valid US visa; permanent resident card | Page dated 31 Aug 2026 |
| Paris[4] | Latest tax return (déclaration d'impôt) | Evidence of tax residence |
| Rome | Document proving residency status in Italy, Cyprus, Albania or Libya | Rome covers four countries |
| Madrid | Spanish or Andorran nationality, or permanent residence in Spain or Andorra | Page does not list documents |
| Vientiane | Lao nationality or permanent residence in Laos | Page does not list documents |
| Singapore | PR: Blue Identity Card (both sides) and Re-entry Permit (Form 7) | Page dated 7 Sep 2026 |
| Fukuoka | Japanese: juminhyo. Non-Japanese: proof of permanent residence in Japan | Page dated 7 Sep 2026 |
| Oslo | Proof of permanent residence in Norway or Iceland | Page dated 15 Sep 2026 |
| Ho Chi Minh City[12] | Foreigners: temporary or permanent residence card | Temporary residence declarations rejected. Page has no recent date and may predate the change |

Common cases
You are a citizen living in your home country
Your passport shows nationality, but most embassies do not say whether the passport alone is enough. A national ID card, a tax return (Paris) or an official address record (juminhyo in Japan) is the safer choice. Use what your embassy names.
You are a foreigner with permanent residence
Use your permanent residence card or the national equivalent (UK ILR, US green card). Check that it is in date.
You have a temporary or fixed-term permit
This is the grey zone. London gives only permanent examples. Washington DC and Los Angeles accept a "valid U.S. visa". Rome says "residency status". Ho Chi Minh City accepts a temporary residence card. Practice differs. If your permit is temporary, ask the embassy in writing before you pay.
You live in one country but are a citizen of another
Madrid and Vientiane word the rule as "national or permanent resident" of their own country. Your residence proof must be for the country of the post you use. If you could use either country, check both posts' pages and ask the post before you pay. See which embassy.
Mistakes to avoid
- A hotel booking or short rental contract. That was the old "current location" idea and no longer fits.
- An expired residence card.
- A document type your embassy does not name. Check the embassy page.
Before you apply
- Your document is one your embassy names, or you asked the embassy in writing.
- It is in date on the day you submit.
- It is for the country of the post you use.
- It is not a hotel booking or a short rental contract.
- It has a certified translation if it is not in English and your post asks.
Not sure your document is enough? The DTV pre-check compares it with your embassy's list before you pay. We do not decide on your visa and cannot promise approval.
Not confirmed yet
No official page we read states these points. Ask your embassy before you pay or submit.
- Whether a passport alone counts as proof of residence for citizens.
- A residence document list at Canberra, Sydney, Ottawa, Berlin, Stockholm, The Hague and Moscow.
- Whether London asks non-UK or non-Irish nationals for extra proof of immigration status.
- Whether the Ho Chi Minh City page, which accepts a temporary residence card, predates the change.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as proof of permanent residence for the DTV?
It depends on the post. London names UK indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residency, Washington DC a valid US visa or permanent resident card, Paris your latest tax return, Singapore the Blue Identity Card and Re-entry Permit for PRs, and Fukuoka a juminhyo for Japanese citizens.
Is my passport enough if I am a citizen?
Most embassies do not say. A national ID card, a tax return or an official address record is the safer choice.
Does a temporary residence permit count?
London gives only permanent examples. Washington DC and Los Angeles accept a valid US visa. Ho Chi Minh City accepts a temporary residence card. Ask your embassy in writing.
Can I use a hotel booking or rental contract?
No. That was the old "current location" idea, which proof of permanent residence replaced on 31 August 2026.
Why does Los Angeles accept a driving licence?
The Los Angeles page, dated 31 August 2026, lists a valid driving licence, a valid US visa or a permanent resident card.
