This page is not for you if your spouse is a Thai citizen, your partner and you are not married, or your child is in an international school in Thailand. Those cases use other visas or need an answer from the embassy first.
Who counts as family
| Person | Counts? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Spouse of a DTV holder | Yes | London, Washington DC, Madrid |
| Child under 20 of a DTV holder | Yes | London, Washington DC, Madrid |
| Parent, adult child, unmarried partner | Not on any page we read | - |
| Spouse of a Thai citizen | Not on the DTV pages. Singapore uses the Non-O | Singapore Non-O page |
| Child in an international school in Thailand | Paris says a Non-immigrant ED visa | Paris |
London accepts a marriage certificate, a birth certificate or an adoption certificate as proof of relationship. If your case is not on a list, ask the embassy before you pay.
Documents for the family category
| Document | What the pages say |
|---|---|
| Passport and photo | Passport biodata page and a photo taken within 6 months (London) |
| Main holder's details | Washington DC: the holder's government ID, passport page and DTV approval. Madrid: a copy of the holder's DTV. Paris: the holder's passport page and DTV |
| Proof of relationship | Marriage, birth or adoption certificate (London) |
| Funds | 500,000 THB or the local figure. Los Angeles and Oslo list it for all three categories |
| Residence proof | New since 31 Aug 2026. See proof of residence |
| Criminal record certificate | New since 31 Aug 2026. London lists it for spouses and children too. Child rules are on police clearance |
Extra papers for children under 20
Washington DC asks for these, and they are a good model for any post:
- A copy of the birth certificate.
- The parents' marriage certificate, or a notarized custody order.
- The parents' passports or IDs.
- A notarized parental consent if the child travels alone.
Fukuoka adds that a dependant who cannot get a police certificate because of an age limit may send a letter from the issuing authority instead.
Where the family member applies
Since 31 August 2026, a DTV application needs proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply. Madrid, Singapore and Vientiane accept only their own nationals or permanent residents. A spouse who lives in a different country from the main holder may need to apply in their own country of residence. See which embassy.
Washington DC says it cannot issue visas to foreign nationals who are currently in Thailand.
Spouse of a Thai citizen: the Non-O route
For the spouse of a Thai citizen, the one primary example we found is the Non-Immigrant O visa at Singapore (page updated 18 May 2026). Other posts set their own rules.
| Item | Singapore Non-O (spouse of a Thai citizen) |
|---|---|
| Who | Applicant lawfully married to a Thai citizen |
| Documents | Marriage certificate with English translation, invitation or explanation letter from the Thai spouse or family with a handwritten signature, copy of the Thai spouse's passport and ID, flight ticket, long-term Singapore pass valid 2 months or more |
| Funds | At least 400,000 THB or SGD 16,000 for 3 months |
| Fee | SGD 100, non-refundable |
| Validity | Single entry, valid 90 days after issue. Extensions go through Thai immigration after arrival |
| When | Apply at least 21 working days before travel |
This site does not cover the Non-O in full. Read your own embassy's Non-O page.
Common mistakes
- Applying as family before you have the main holder's DTV details.
- A foreign marriage or birth certificate with no certified English translation. London and Washington DC ask for certified, notarized translations.
- A child who turns 20 before the decision. The pages say "under 20" and do not explain the birthday case. Ask the embassy.
- No criminal record certificate for a family member.
- Using the DTV family route when the spouse is Thai, without asking which visa applies.
Before you apply
- You have a copy of the main holder's DTV or DTV approval.
- You have the marriage, birth or adoption certificate, with a certified translation if needed.
- Each family member has residence proof for the post's country.
- Each family member has a police certificate, or the post's exception applies.
- Children under 20 have the extra papers listed above.
Fees are non-refundable on the pages that state it (Helsinki, Singapore, Fukuoka). A DTV pre-check compares your family file with your embassy's list before you pay. The embassy decides.
Not confirmed yet
No official page we read states these points. Ask your embassy before you pay or submit.
- Whether a family member may rely on the holder's bank account, or needs their own funds. Oslo says all applicants show 500,000 THB.
- What happens when a child turns 20 during the application.
- Whether the child of a Thai citizen can use any DTV route.
- Whether children under 16 can use a parent's certificate outside Washington DC.
Frequently asked questions
Who can apply for the DTV family category?
The spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder (London, Washington DC, Madrid).
Can the family apply at the same time as the main holder?
The pages ask for a copy of the holder's DTV or the DTV approval. That suggests the holder applies first, but no page says so in plain words. Ask your embassy.
Does each family member need their own police certificate?
London lists it for spouses and children. Washington DC lets children under 16 use the main sponsor's FBI certificate. Fukuoka accepts a letter if an age limit stops the issue.
My spouse is Thai. Can I use the DTV family category?
The DTV pages we read cover the family of a DTV holder, not of a Thai citizen. Singapore uses the Non-Immigrant O visa for this case.
Can my child study in Thailand on a DTV?
Paris says children in international schools need a Non-immigrant ED visa instead.
