DTV visa requirements in 2026

The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year, multiple-entry visa for remote workers, people doing Thai "soft power" activities such as Muay Thai, Thai cooking or medical treatment, and their spouses and children under 20, with stays of up to 180 days per entry. Since 31 August 2026, every applicant also needs proof of permanent residence in the country where they apply and a criminal record certificate.

These two papers come on top of the passport, the photo, 500,000 THB in funds and a purpose document. The fee is set by each embassy in its own currency.

Who can apply

London names three purposes, DTV1 to DTV3:

  1. Workcation: digital nomad, remote worker, foreign talent or freelancer. See workcation.
  2. Thai soft power activities: for example Muay Thai, Thai culinary training or medical treatment. See soft power.
  3. Family: spouse and children under 20 of a DTV holder. See family.

Since 31 August 2026, several embassies accept applications only from nationals or permanent residents of their country. Madrid and Vientiane say so plainly. See which embassy.

Fee by embassy

Each embassy charges in its own currency. These are the figures on official embassy pages we read on 22 October 2026.

Embassies add their own details. Washington DC and Los Angeles want an FBI certificate issued within 3 months. London wants a police certificate issued within 6 months. Paris wants a casier judiciaire under 3 months, your latest tax return as residence proof, and EUR 15,000 per month for 3 months.

The full story of the 31 August 2026 change is in what changed on 31 August 2026. The visa-free change of 15 September 2026 does not affect the DTV: the MFA says it covers only the exemption and visa-on-arrival schemes.

How the process works

  1. Create an account at thaievisa.go.th and choose the DTV.
  2. Upload every document as a clear PDF. Unclear files can lead to a request for more documents.
  3. Pay the fee online.
  4. Wait for the decision. Paris says about 4 weeks, or longer if documents are incomplete. Check the time on your embassy's page.

You apply and pay on the official site yourself. We do not apply for you and we cannot promise approval.

Common mistakes

Before you apply

  1. You are a national or permanent resident of the country of the post you use.
  2. Your residence proof is a document that post names.
  3. Your police certificate is within the post's age limit, or under 3 months if it states none.
  4. Your funds meet the post's figure for the months it names.
  5. Your purpose document matches your category.
  6. Your passport has the validity your post asks for.

If you want a second look at your files before you pay, use the DTV pre-check.

Not confirmed yet

No official page we read states these points. Ask your embassy before you pay or submit.

  • A single 2026 base fee in baht. The older figure of 10,000 THB comes from the 2024 launch material.
  • The DTV fee at New Delhi. The April 2026 notice shows the fees as an image.
  • The DTV fee at Canberra, Ottawa and Moscow, and whether the 2024 fee lists above are still current.

Frequently asked questions

What is the DTV?

The Destination Thailand Visa: a 5-year, multiple-entry visa with stays of up to 180 days per entry, for remote workers, Thai soft power activities and the family of a holder.

How much does the DTV cost?

Each embassy sets the fee in its own currency, for example USD 400 in Washington DC, GBP 300 in London and EUR 350 in Paris. See the table above.

How much money do I need for the DTV?

500,000 THB or the equivalent, or the local figure your post sets, such as USD 16,000 in Washington DC or GBP 12,000 in London.

Can I extend a DTV stay?

London says once per entry, for up to 180 days, at the Immigration Bureau in Thailand.

What changed for the DTV on 31 August 2026?

Proof of permanent residence replaced the old "current location" document, and a criminal record certificate was added. Applications paid before that date follow the old rules.

Can I apply at any Thai embassy?

No. Several posts accept only their own nationals or permanent residents. Use the post for your country of nationality or permanent residence.
